Sabrina Carpenter may have had a runaway hit with "Espresso," but she didn't always believe people would "connect" with the song.

The 25-year-old star recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about her initial thoughts on the track, revealing that she didn't know if listeners would connect with the song when it came out in April 2024, saying, "I remember deciding to put this song out in the beginning of summer and thinking espresso, coffee is kind of more of a fall beverage."

However, the song quickly became a phenomenon and grew to become one of the most popular tracks of the year and even earned a couple Grammy nominations. While reflecting on the success, Carpenter called the positive response to the hit "kismet" with how everything worked out in the end, per People.

"I really didn't know if it would connect, but the sentiment and the sound of the song and the confidence that it kind of just carries along with it was something that I really believed in," she said, adding, "So I had literally no idea that anyone would like it, but I like it, and that was kind of all that mattered to me in that moment, and something I try to remember over and over again."

Carpenter previously poked fun at just how much of a hit the song became, jokingly apologizing for anyone who was "sick" of hearing it played so often. She also revealed last year that the track was a "manifestation tactic" while providing insight into the song's history.
