Strong Gusts Expected To Boost Wildfires In Southern California

Explosive fire conditions are expected to continue in Southern California as winds gusts potentially top 80 mph, says Los Angeles County Fire Chief, Daryl Osby. The winds, in combination with severely dry conditions, have resulted in red flag warnings in effect through Saturday night. At last check, there are five active fires, but more are expected to erupt.

Los Angeles Mayor, Eric Garcetti, says it's too early to allow evacuees to return to their homes. All schools in the San Fernando Valley and a number of West Side schools are closed today and Friday. Also of significant concern? Animals. At one ranch alone, 29 horses were killed in the blaze. But there are also wild animals to consider - and local officials are encouraging residents to bring their domestic animals inside for now - so that the wild animals can pass.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles County Sheriff, Jim McDonnell, urged people to be ready to evacuate if ordered to do so. That includes gathering relevant paperwork. In all, more than 80-thousand acres have been scorched so far.
