A video shared online shows a truck smashing into multiple emergency vehicles on Interstate 94 in Michigan during icy conditions on Thursday (December 12).
The accident took place at 8:30 a.m. in Comstock Township, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office, who was at the scene alongside the Comstock Department of Fire and Rescue in response to another rollover crash. The 24-foot box truck lost control, jackknifed and struck a Comstock Department of Fire and Rescue engine, as well as one Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office cruiser, before overturning.
"Comstock Fire and the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene of a roll over crash on eastbound I-94 near the 80.5 mile marker (just east of Sprinkle Rd.)," the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office wrote on its Facebook account. "While personnel were working the original crash, a 24 foot box truck lost control and struck three Comstock Fire vehicles and a KCSO cruiser before rolling over and coming to a rest."
Officials said no first responders were injured, however, the truck driver was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.
"We urge everyone to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary during severe winter weather," said Kalamazoo County Sheriff Rick Fuller via FOX Weather. "If you must be on the road, please use extreme caution, reduce your speed, and allow extra time to reach your destination. Your safety—and the safety of first responders—depends on it."
An estimated five inches of snow was reported to have fallen in Comstock, Michigan, before the crash took place at 8:30 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. Eastbound I-94 was closed at Sprinkle Road as crews worked to clear the highway after the crash took place.
