SMU Student Section Cleared Out For Not Following COVID-19 Guidelines

The student section of the SMU game was cleared out at Saturdays game against Memphis due to some not following COVID-19 guidelines, according to the school.

SMU said in a statement that some of the students had failed to follow the guidelines that were set in place for health and safety during the pandemic.

The statement also said that some staff and security had tried to get the students to comply several times.

The statement read, "During the game, some students began to gather and disregard these safety measures. They were asked to spread out and mask when in close contact. After numerous attempts by staff and security to get the students to comply with these safety requirements, it became necessary to clear the area."

Many of the students left the game, while others moved to seats in other areas of the stadium.

There were reminders sent out to the students during the week that refreshed students on the safety guidelines, and extra staffing was put in place to ensure that students were complying.

"While no one at SMU wants to see fans leave it is important to preserve our privilege to host games with fans in attendance during a pandemic," the statement said.
