The 2017 American Music Awards are in the books with Bruno Mars walking away from the big winner, taking home seven trophies including the top honor of Artist of the Year. Bruno wasn’t in the house for his big win though, accepting his award via video from, as he put it, a “(bleeping) minivan.”
Other big winners included former One Direction star Niall Horan, who took home New Artist of the Year, Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito,” which won two trophies, Collaboration of the Year and Favorite Song, Pop/Rock, and Lady Gaga who nabbed Female Artist of the Year, Pop/Rock.
The show opened with Jamie Foxx and his daughter surrounded by first responders. “This year, we needed the power of music to escape the news of the day,” he said. “We needed the power of music to help us heal. From hurricanes, wildfires, hate, hatred-fueled violence, 2017 was a year that tested our faith. In these moments of crisis, heroes emerged.” He then introduced “two of the world’s most powerful voices,” Pink and Kelly Clarkson who came together for an emotional and amazing performance of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts,” as pictures of first responders helping folks affected by this year’s tragedies played in the background.
The night also featured a celebration of Diana Ross, who was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The celebration was introduced by he son Evan Ross, followed by a video montage showing some of the highlights of her career. Diana then came out and got the audience on their feet for a medley of some of her greatest hits, including “I’m Coming Out,” “Take Me Higher,” “Ease On Down The Road,” “The Best Years of My Life,” and “Ain’t No Mountain Enough.” She ended the performance by bringing out her entire family, including her adorable grandchildren who almost stole her spotlight. “This is all about love. All about love. This says it all,” Diana said in accepting her honor. “This is my family. And I'm sending love out there to all of you, each and every one of you of our global family. And I really, really love being here, and I feel so humbled by this.”
