Caring Nurse Adopts Dog Of Terminal Patient To Save Him From Shelter

Leigh Ann's good news story of the day will put a smile on your face. A Georgia nurse adopts her terminally ill patient’s dog. Kim Still, a nurse at Northside Hospital Gwinnett, first became a nurse four years ago because she wanted to help people. She was recently assigned an elderly patient who was dying and the two formed an immediate connection. Above everything that she had to worry about, the woman was most concerned about what would happen to her pet Chihuahua, Jax, when she passed away.

When that day finally came and the patient’s family flew in to take care of her possessions, they gave Jax to a shelter. "I was very worried that he was not going to be given a good chance and possibly be put down if he didn't get out of the shelter," Still says. So she went to the shelter and arranged to take Jax home to live with her.

Still knew it was the right thing to do, but what she didn’t expect was the effect it was going to have on her. "They just totally like, changed my life," she says. “He is one of the most loving dogs ever." She says that Jax will always be a reminder of why she became a nurse in the first place. And when word got out about her good deed, Still was given an award at her job for her extraordinary compassion.
